My Experiments With 5 AM Club

My Journey: 8:00 AM to 5:00 AM

My journey to the 5 AMClub started in my 12th standard. If you are reading my blogs, you know that I am fond of books. Therefore, following my nature I bought some books and kept them in the drawer. One night, I was reading a book but was not really enjoying it. It happens once in a while. Therefore, I thought to try some new books I have bought.

I opened my drawer and took out the books I have recently bought. It’s funny that before starting reading this book I was not knowing that this person is going to advocate for getting up in the morning. It was really a good thing for me becuase if I would have known that I would have not read the book, probably.

I started reading the book. I completed the book within 20 to 25 days. To be honest, the first part of the book was really boring. Although the first part was boring, the second part was really amazing. The book was really worth it.

I tried waking up early many times throughout my 12th. It was not shocking to me that I failed every time. It was becuase I was a night owl. After constant failures, I put a full stop to the whole thing.

A new beginning!

When my 12th standard ended, I decided to give the 5 am club another shot. I knew from my past experience that I will have to make some changes. If I just put my alarm to 5 AM and sleep, I am never going to wake up at 5 AM.

Therefore, I convinced one of my friends to come with me to play basketball at 6 AM. My friends have always been willing to participate in my experiments and I am grateful to them for that. We both have to wake up at 5 AM to get ready and reach the basketball court at 6 AM. It was really fun becuase of both of us enjoyed playing basketball. Moreover, I really liked the company of my friend. We would discuss many topics ranging from politics to science while playing basketball.

A Twist in the Story!

Hurray! we have built our habit of waking up early at 5 AM. I wish I could say that but there is a twist. Our basketball sessions at 6 AM were stopped becuase the court needed some work. We were again back to normal- 8:00 AM. It was really demotivating. For the next month, there were only a few days when I woke up at 5 AM. Now, I was not giving much thought to it becuase I didn’t want to get myself anxious.

One day I got a dm on Facebook saying, “ Would you like to join the 5 AM club?”  In the first instance, I ignored the dm but the person followed up with me, again. I checked out the link this time, finally. It was something like this, “21 days gamified Bootcamp to wake up at 5 AM.” I knew that waking up at 5 AM could be really a game-changer. Therefore, I paid 500 Rs. and got into the club.

It’s been a one and a half month of waking up at 5 am every day (with few exceptional days). Now, I suggest anybody who wants to wake up early at It’s one of the best things that has happened to me.

Waking Up Early Checklist

Just Before Sleeping

  • Write down why you want to wake up at 5 am. (It will help you to prepare your mind for waking up.
  • Keep your phone/alarm clock away from where you sleep. (It’s becuase you will have to move to that place to snooze the alarm in the morning).
  • Install Alarmy: It’s a great app. You will have to solve maths problems if you want the alarm to stop ringing. (When you will solve a maths problem, your mind will become active and you will not feel sleepy.)

Just After Waking Up

  • Solve the Alarmy questions to snooze it. (If you are using it).
  • Brush your teeth. (All of the toothpaste have refreshing ingredients in it which will help you wake up).
  • Drink a glass of water. (Your body was without water for approximately 6-9 hours. Therefore, it’s important to rehydrate it again)
  • Take bath. (This is step is optional. I personally don’t do it but it works for many people).

What you can do after waking up at 5 am?

20/20/20 Rule

You divide the hour just after waking up or after completing the 5 AM Club.

First 20 min pocket-
Do exercise. It’s scientifically proven that when you exercise (especially after waking up), your body secretes some hormones. These hormones are healthy and make you feel energetic.

Second 20 min pocket-
Do something that calms you. You can meditate, reflect, journal, plan or just simply sit quietly. It will help you spend some time with yourself before going in the hustle of the day. It also helps to prepare for the day.

Last 20 min pocket-
In this pocket, learn something. You can learn anything. It can be a hobby or something you always wanted to learn. It can be educational youtube videos, podcasts or audiobooks. In my case, it’s reading books. I love reading books.

90/90/1 Rule

After you complete the 20/20/20 rule, you can do the 90/90/1 rule. It is very simple but powerful, too.

Step1: Choose an activity that you consider one of the most important activities to boost your career.

Step2: Do this activity for 90 min every day for 90 days.

I am not the inventor of the above things. I have learned it from people, books, videos, and personal experiences. I am doing or have tried almost all the above-said things. Therefore, I believe in their power and would request you to give it a shot. I have learned 60% of the above from 2 books i.e ,

  1. 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma.
  2. Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.

I can even fight with you to convince you to read these two books. Please read these two books.

Conclusion: Please Set Aside Excuses.

There are many excuses I see people giving for not waking up early. One of the biggest ones is- “ I am not an early riser. I am a night owl. It’s genetic and I can change it.”

I would ask you to reflect on your statement again. I have no scientific evidence to prove it but I believe it’s possible to change a night owl to an early riser. Why I do believe this? It’s becuase I was a night owl. If I can change to being an early riser, anybody can. If your default mode is not to wake up early, it will be definitely hard. Despite the fact that it will be hard, I would say, “Go for it. Keep failing until you succeed.” I say this becuase waking up at 5 AM Club is worth it.

This is one of the several excuses that people give to not waking up early. Actually, they are the excuses which prevents people to find the inner genius in them. Do you want to find the genius within you.
